Numbers 7:13 And his offering was one silver plate whose weight was 130 shekels,[a] one silver basin of 70 shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 14 one golden dish of 10 shekels, full of incense; 15 one bull from the herd, one ram, one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; 16 one male goat for a sin offering; 17 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, and five male lambs a year old.
Details, details, details. Why didn't God just say, "Repeat this offering for each of the twelve tribes"?
I am doing something different this year. I am listening/reading the Bible. I have an app with a dramatic reading and it is very nice to hear the Word read. It seems to give a different perspective. Today I came to Numbers 7 and, my word, the text above is repeated, over and over.
I dare not say "why??" because this is God's Word. So, there must be a purpose in this constant repetition. The only change in each section is that it begins and ends with the tribal name and the name of the leader who is to come with this special dedicatory offering.
As we already know, Jehovah God is a detailed God. We see that in the diversity of His Creation. For him to repeat instructions twelve times is not that exaggerated. He was emphasizing the fact that this was an important act, which itself would be repeated over twelve days. It was so important that the people knew how precise God was and how his rules needed to be observed. This passage, though difficult to read at a normal reading rate, is a good warning to us. It tells us of the holiness of our God and how that when he gives us instructions we are to pay close attention.
